"External brain stimulation goes deep"

Typically external stimulation of the brain can only penetrate the more surface levels of the brain but this article suggests a different outcome of external stimulation.  The study discussed in this article claims there is a possible way to activate deeper regions of the brain without surgery to enhance intelligence and reduce depression.  To test this theory, researchers applied two electric currents to mouse skulls, where they observed the depth of which the current reached in the brain.  The currents were turned to two slightly different frequencies, at different angles, converging at the hippocampus of the brain.  They adapted transcranial stimulation to reach deeper levels of the brain and found that neurons did fire in the hippocampus of the mice brain's, revealing this method could be perfected to alter the deeper regions without surgery.  This article provided further insight into neural responses via external stimulation, which could drastically improve methods of brain altering at a deeper level.  I believe finding ways to avoid brain surgery or implants for deep brain stimulation (DBS) is crucial, and this article efficiently informed readers of a possible great change in medicine.
